Employers, Employees, Unions , Disputes, Harmony
The course Industrial Relations is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between employers, employees, and the government within an industrial setting. It focuses on maintaining harmony and cooperation in the workplace by studying the principles, systems, and practices that govern industrial relations. The course aims to develop students’ knowledge of the causes and consequences of industrial disputes and equip them with the skills to handle and resolve such conflicts effectively through mechanisms like negotiation, conciliation, mediation, arbitration, and adjudication. It explores the evolution, importance, and approaches to industrial relations in India, emphasizing the role of the state, employers, and workers in promoting industrial peace. Students will also gain insights into trade unions — their objectives, functions, types, structure, and challenges — and understand how they contribute to collective bargaining and employee welfare. The course further examines the concept of grievance handling, discipline, and standing orders, which form the foundation of a healthy industrial environment. In addition, it highlights the significance of Collective Bargaining and Workers’ Participation in Management (WPM) as essential tools for ensuring mutual trust and cooperation between management and workers. By the end of the course, students will be able to analyze real-life industrial relations issues, apply dispute resolution methods, and appreciate the role of legislation and participative management in achieving organizational efficiency and industrial harmony.
